Support Local – Outside the walls of the Restaurant and into the Community

The business philosophy of RauDZ Regional Table in Kelowna British Columbia is ‘support local, buy local, eat and drink local’, and they take that statement beyond just sourcing ingredients from local farmers, winemakers, cheese makers and artisans.   With two small words ‘support local’ this independent restaurant lends a hand to countless organizations, individuals and community projects with donations of food, time, funds and their skills.
In the past few months, the RauDZ team has supported some favourite causes, as well as helped, in their own small way, to launch a new initiative.
In June, along with some of the top chefs of the Okanagan, and Canadian Culinary Federation Team Canada – Dubai, the team at RauDZ Regional Table participated in the annual fundraiser Earth, Wind, Fire for The Nature Trust of BC who conserve land in BC for future generations.  This year, the funds were earmarked to acquire two parcels of land on the Okanagan River along with continued land management within the Okanagan.  The Nature Trust of BC has invested more than a staggering $63 million to acquire 61,000 hectares of ecologically significant lands since 1971.  This annual event is not only a fundraiser, but an opportunity to also celebrate the organization’s success stories.
Soup Sisters 2014
In July, a call was made to donate aprons to the Soup Sisters who were launching their second initiative in Kelowna where they would make soup for the kids at the Kelowna Overnight Shelter.  They had asked for gently used aprons, but since RauDZ were ordering new anyway they simply added 20 to the order to answer the call. Under the leadership of cookbook author, Jennifer Schell, Kelowna Soup Sisters kicked off in spring 2011 with the monthly soup sister offerings going to the Kelowna Women’s Shelter.  Now this heartwarming project has grown with the Soup Sisters also helping to warm stomachs at the Kelowna Overnight Shelter.
Every summer since Chef Butters can remember, he has participated in the FarmFolk CityFolk’s Feast of Fields.  When in Tofino at the Wickinnish Inn, he participated in the Island version and since moving to the Okanagan, he has participated in all six Okanagan Feasts.  This event is described as a wandering harvest festival raising funds to support the efforts of FarmFolk City Folk who work to cultivate and support community-based sustainable food systems. This event brings together over 60 restaurants, wineries, breweries and distilleries all celebrating the local farmer and food artisan.  You can view the Feast of Fields video here

Thanks to some ‘former’ friends, Chef Butters and Audrey Surrao were nominated for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.  They accepted the challenge in honour of a local woman who battled not only ALS but the right to die with dignity.  They, of course, nominated their entire staff, who truly stepped up and accepted the challenge and made a donation to ALS.  The kitchen team at RauDZ is always first to jump in and get involved.    You can see the video of the challenge here.

Friend and fellow Okanagan Chefs Association Past President, Stuart Klassen ‘challenged’ the RauDZ team to participate in the K-Town Showdown BBQ Cookoff.  Raising funds for the Central Okanagan Hospice Society, RauDZ BBQ Brisket Stuffed Smokie with Crispy Korean Style BBQ Brisket, Housemade Kimchi, Char Sui Sesame Mayonnaise on a mini bun with a side of Duck Fat Dipped Corn on the Cob made the booth very popular but the cook-off win went to Eldorado Hotel with their Brisket Taco.

Just this past weekend on the community calendar was the Heart of Gold fundraiser for Kelowna General Hospital.  This year there was a real twist on the event with 10 chefs participating, including Chef Butters, with each serving 40 guests their own unique menu.  This event is a major fundraiser for the hospital and the venue of a hanger at the Kelowna Airport provided a unique backdrop to the entire evening.
